Do Kids Need Supplements?

Do your kids benefit from taking vitamins or supplements? What vitamins and minerals do kids need to be healthy? Read on to find out.

October is Children's Health Month, and we’re going to share ways you can help your kids stay healthy and happy. We’re starting with a look at what vitamins and minerals your little ones need to support their overall health and wellness.

What Vitamins Do Kids Need?

Though your child needs a variety of nutrients to feel healthy, the CDC says there are three essential nutrients that they should not miss out on — vitamin D, iron, and zinc.

Vitamin D helps support strong bones and teeth.* Foods with vitamin D include eggs and certain types of fish like salmon.

Iron is good for overall health. Foods rich in iron include red meat, poultry, dark leafy vegetables, and beans. However, kids should not take more than the recommended daily dose; iron supplements are not suggested unless prescribed by a physician.

Zinc is a great supporter of immune function.* Foods with zinc include dairy, beans and legumes, and fish.

Since kids need just about every vitamin and mineral for healthy growth and development, it’s important to provide them with a variety of foods. Other vitamins and minerals that will supplement a nutritious diet include calcium, iodine, choline, vitamins A, B12, and folate.

When Do Kids Need Supplements?

Generally, your child will get the necessary nutrients from their diet. However, at times there are some kids who will need extra support from supplements.

For example, if you have a picky eater in the family or if your child requires a specialized diet, it can be difficult to keep them well-nourished. In these cases, there are several supplements designed to help support your child’s nutritional gaps. Discuss any concerns with your child’s pediatrician before starting supplements.

Healthy Habits Start Young

Now that you’re planning ways to help your child stay properly nourished, consider what kinds of foods will help support them. There are several brain foods that can help support your little ones succeed at school, and that paired with a good night’s sleep will do wonders for your child’s health and wellness.

If you are considering supplements for your little one, KAL’s Dinosaurs® line is a range of vitamins and minerals designed specifically for children. Our Vitamin C-Rex® gummies and MultiSaurus® gummies are some of our most popular sellers. And as you work hard to help keep your kids healthy, don’t forget to take care of yourself too.
