Do You Really Need a Multivitamin Supplement?

Do You Really Need a Multivitamin Supplement?

Multivitamin supplements are very popular with estimates showing that one-third of all American adults and one-quarter of children take a multivitamin supplement.1 But why are multivitamin supplements so popular?

Here’s Why You May Need a Multivitamin

Your body needs a wide array of nutrients from the foods you eat to function properly. But what happens if those foods don’t contain the amount of nutrients needed? Research demonstrates that the foods grown today are not as nutritious as in the past due to soil erosion, mechanical tillage, and the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. 2

In addition to depleted soil, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services and Agriculture, the typical American diet may likely be low in important nutrients such as vitamins A, C, D, and E, calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, and fiber.3 The combination of depleted soil and a nutrient-deficient diet creates nutrient gaps that a multivitamin supplement may be able to fill.

The Multiple Benefits of a Multivitamin

According to a consensus statement featuring a panel of 14 international experts in nutritional science and healthcare, multivitamin supplements can significantly improve nutritional status and can also be individualized according to age, gender, lifecycle, and other characteristics to support individualized health needs.4 The consensus statement goes on to report that adequate nutrient intake is necessary to support normal biological functioning that is required for optimal health.4

In addition to filling nutritional gaps, research shows that taking a multivitamin supplement can also help support the health of the brain, immune system, heart, and eyes.5

Choosing a High-Quality Individualized Multivitamin

There are many multivitamin supplements to choose from including some that are specifically tailored to meet your individual needs.

There are multivitamin formulations for children, women, men, women and men over age 50, and individuals looking for more energy or vitality. It may also be wise to consider an AM/PM multivitamin because certain nutrients are better utilized in the morning and certain nutrients will help support sound sleep and relaxation in the evening. For example, KAL Multivitamin AM/PM features premium nutrients like matcha, spirulina, tart cherry and magnesium glycinate and when the full dose is taken, helps support energy metabolism, nerve function and muscle recovery.*

Making the Most of Your Multivitamin

Even if your diet is perfect, it may be a good idea to consider a multivitamin because of soil depletion and reduced nutrients in the food supply. In addition, if your diet isn’t perfect, you may also benefit from a multivitamin. Fortunately, you can customize your choice based on your gender, age, timing, and other factors. KAL’s Multivitamin AM/PM line features a version for Adults, Men’s, Women’s and Women’s 50+, plus our MultiSaurus® Gummies are made to support your child’s health and wellness.
